Junior Seau Suicide Renews NFL Concussion Debate

Junior Seau's grieving family does NOT believe the former football great's death was related to on-field concussions he sustained as a player, but his suicide has nevertheless renewed an ongoing debate over the NFL and brain injuries.

Police found Junior Seau dead yesterday at his San Diego County home.

Seau family sources tell say the death shocked them even more than it did his many fans, as Junior never complained about concussion-related medical problems, nor did he mention or appear to be suffering from depression.

Junior Seau Found Dead

Seau never spoke, allegedly, about the ongoing legal dispute between the NFL and retired players who claim the league concealed critical information about long-term effects of concussions over the past few decades.

Junior's apparent suicide, from a gunshot wound to the chest, instantly drew comparisons to the death of former Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson.

Duerson left a suicide note explaining he shot himself in the chest because he wanted his brain to be sent to the "NFL brain bank" for further study.

The family is unsure why Junior wanted to kill himself, but feel there isn't necessarily a link to concussions and Duerson comparisons are premature.

Neurosurgeon Julian Bailes, longtime researcher into brain damage from concussions, responded with grief and medical questions about what toll Junior's lengthy football career (20 seasons) might have taken on the 43-year-old.

"As both a football fan and a researcher, the news comes with great sadness first of all for such a great player. But I think we have to add him to the list of those that we worry about who could have effects of chronic, repetitive brain trauma," said Bailes.

The chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the NorthShore University HealthSystem in Chicago added, "We don't have any strong evidence (yet about Seau), and we know that people commit suicide for other reasons. … But to me it's also concerning due to the fact that he had such a long playing history."

"The emerging research is perhaps pointing to the amount of exposure to repetitive head contacts being like a dose response. … The more you're exposed to sun light; you get a higher chance of skin cancer. … The more CAT Scans you have; you are exposed to radiation and perhaps side effects."

Nip That Social Media Crisis In The Bud With uberVU Signals

uberVU Signals 1uberVU already offers a dashboard for monitoring social media conversations about your company, but CEO ?Mark Pascarella and founder/Chief Product Officer Vladimir Oane says it's time to help brands find the crucial signals in the social media noise. So they're launching a new feature today called, predictably, uberVU Signals. Nowadays, whenever I meet with a social media monitoring company, they want to talk about the need to move the technology beyond the flood of data. Pascarella says that for uberVU, that means taking "a really sophisticated set of algorithms at the intersection of big data and artificial intelligence" and using those algorithms to find the social media updates that could become important to you, based on things like influence, sentiment, volume, and demographics.

Who run HBO? "Girls"! Well, at least they will for one more season. The Lena Dunham-created dramedy for the cable network has been renewed for a 10-episode second season.

The show, in which Dunham also stars alongside Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet, follows the lives of four twentysomethings as they navigate love, life and their careers in New York City post-college. Judd Apatow serves as an executive producer on the show.

The show, currently knee-deep in its first season, debuted on April 15 to lots of buzz and hype. To date, the Huffington Post reports, the show has averaged 3.8 million viewers, per HBO.

The young women on the show portray four very different Big Apple lasses. There's Williams' type-A gallery assistant, Marnie; Kirke's flighty, free-spirited Jess; Mamet's prissy, virginal college student, Shoshanna; and, of course, Hannah, played by Dunham, the show's main protagonist, a writer who talks a lot about her memoir without having actually done very much to get it off the ground and continues to rely on her parents for money.

"I would describe Hannah as a well-meaning but often trouble-making 24-year-old girl living in New York. She wants to be a writer but she doesn't realize in order to do that she actually has to write," Dunham explained to MTV News about her small-screen persona. "Despite being plucky, her circumstances aren't always going her way, so it's about some of those challenges for her. She loves to eat and dance alone in her room."

BlackBerry gets its game on at BBW

One of the things BlackBerry has never really had going for it, is a deep games catalog. Now, that isn't about to change in one fell swoop, but things are about to get a lot better at BlackBerry World 2012. RIM's head of gaming, Anders Jeppsson, took to twitter to let the world know about the impressive pile of titles heading to the PlayBook and BlackBerry 10. The biggest names are certainly Jetpack Joyride, from Halfbrick (the studio behind Fruit Ninja), and Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1. Other games in the pipeline include Galaxy on Fire 2 and Star Marine, while Tomb Raider fans can get down with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light starting today. Keep an ear out for more to hit during this week's BBW.
