Instead of a Campfire: Top 20 Family Activities During a Fire ...

As you probably already know, this summer has been a very dry one so far? Of course, this is great for sunny day activities, swimming, boating and fishing, but not so great for forest fires!

This year has been one of the worst up in Northeastern Ontario for the amount of forest fires we have had. As a result most of the summer is being spent under a fire restriction. Of course this is perfectly understandable since the forest is so dry and a simple spark could easily set off a giant forest fire. Obviously, this is not something the average person could live with! But campfires are such an integral part of family camping!

There are many options as to how the family can spent evenings while out camping without a campfire?.

Top 20 Night Time Activities for Families While Under a Fire Restriction

  1. Play board games.
  2. Play cards.
  3. Have a bubble blowing competition.
  4. Collect fireflies in a jar. (Release them before going to bed!)
  5. Go looking for bullfrogs & toads.
  6. Examine the night sky and try to identify constellations and stars with a star map.
  7. Tell ghost stories.
  8. Play truth or dare.
  9. Have a sing-a-long.
  10. Play hide and seak with flashlights and glow stick necklaces.
  11. Go for a midnight swim.
  12. Roast marshmallows and smores over an approved propane flame.
  13. Do a video journal or make a movie featuring the family as the actors. Film ?with an iphone or a video camera.
  14. Plan a scavenger hunt and use gps coordinates or instruction cards to find small prizes.
  15. Have a family jam with guitars, harmonicas, flutes, etc.. if you are a musical family.
  16. Try a new craft like origami or airplane model assembling.
  17. Use your imagination with glow in the dark paints and large poster board sheets.
  18. Have a murder mystery supper with the family. (The bigger the family, the better!)
  19. Play glow frisbee.
  20. Play old time favorite games but play them glow in the dark style.
